Build vs buy

Build or buy a UK energy comparison platform

If you want to sell energy switches under your own brand, you either build the comparison engine or license one. This is an honest breakdown of what each route actually costs, what has to be maintained forever, and which option fits which kind of business.

  • What an in-house energy comparison build really involves
  • The maintenance nobody budgets for
  • Where a generic comparison widget falls short
  • What a white-label platform does and does not include
  • How to decide based on volume and channels

What building in-house actually requires

The comparison itself is the easy part. The work is everything around it: sourcing and normalising tariff data, keeping rates correct across all 14 UK electricity distribution regions, identifying meters from an address, handling Economy 7 and multi-rate configurations, modelling an annual cost that stands up to challenge, and storing consent and audit evidence in a form you can defend months later.

Then it has to keep working. Suppliers reprice, products are withdrawn, regional rates move, and every one of those changes is a data problem your team owns permanently.

  • Tariff and rate ingestion, plus a process for keeping it current
  • Regional and meter-type logic for accurate annual costs
  • Address, MPAN and MPRN resolution
  • Consent capture, versioned wording and a timestamped audit trail
  • The full switch pack, including direct debit details
  • Ongoing maintenance as the market changes

Why a generic comparison widget usually is not enough

An embedded widget can show prices on a website, but it typically stops there. It does not give agents a doorstep or telesales journey, it does not capture the switch pack, it rarely produces an audit trail you control, and it puts someone else's presentation in front of your customer.

If online self-serve is your only channel and volume is low, that can be acceptable. If you have a sales team, it is not.

What a white-label platform gives you instead

You get the comparison engine, tariff data, meter lookups, pricing logic, consent capture and switch record, running under your brand and your domain, across online, doorstep, telesales and venue selling. You keep your supplier relationships, your commercial terms and your customer relationship.

What it does not include is supplier panel access, commission or compliance sign-off. Those stay yours, and they are the parts that actually differentiate your business.

How to decide

Build if energy comparison is your core product, you expect very high volume, and you want to own the data pipeline as an asset. Buy if switching is a revenue channel for a sales business you already run, you need to be live this quarter, or you do not want a permanent data maintenance team.

Volume matters more than it looks: usage-based pricing scales with what you sell, while an in-house build costs the same whether you switch a hundred customers a month or none.
